Is blogging "work" or "hobby"

I ran a poll on Twitter earlier this year to identify how we view blogging as academics. We may consider it as part of our work, as something we take pride in, as something that we feel like our duty perhaps, but at the same time, the results of the poll show that the majority of respondents blog from home, outside of work hours. Granted, in academia the border between work, as the stuff you do in your office, and home is blurry. I too often squeeze in 1 or 2 hours of lighter work in the evening after dinner.

Today, I am interviewing Dr. Susan Thomson for the "How I Work" series. Susan Thomson (sthomson@colgate.edu) is Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies. Her research is dedicated to understanding how systems of power structure the lives of individuals in so-called times of peace. She also studies the practical and ethical challenges of doing field-based research in post-conflict settings. How to review a journal paper

At some point during your PhD or in your years after your PhD, you will be asked to review a paper. I've done a fair amount of reviews by now, and have started to keep track of the reviews I write about a year ago by using Publons. You can see my Pulons profile here. If you receive an invitation to review paper, you need to ask yourself the following questions: 1. Do I have sufficient technical knowledge to review this paper? If not, can I recommend a colleague? 2. Do I have enough time to write this review by the deadline? 3. Do I have a conflict of interest that prevents me from writing an unbiased report? If you have the time and knowledge it takes to review the paper, and no conflict of interest, you can go ahead and review the paper. As you read the paper, you need to keep in mind how you will review the paper. A typical review report follows a certain standard form.
